ENJOY COMFORT, CHARACTER AND CHARM AT HARRY'S HIDEAWAY

Harry's Hideaway Logo

Welcome to Harry’s Hideaway, named after Harry Whyte, the first owner, who opened this building as a General Store in 1911. Harry was a true local pioneer, owning the very first automobile in the area - a testament to his forward-thinking spirit.

We’ve lovingly restored the back storeroom into a charming rustic studio that blends historic character with modern comforts. Whether you’re after a cozy retreat or a space to recharge and be inspired, Harry’s Hideaway offers a stay rich with history, character, and warmth.

Conveniently situated next to the present Ongaonga General Store, you’ll find all the essentials right on your doorstep – along with barista coffee, fresh takeaways, and plenty of local flavour. A complimentary continental breakfast basket will be ready to enjoy on your first morning, and with lightning-fast internet, staying connected couldn’t be easier.

Set in the historic village of Ongaonga, Harry’s Hideaway offers more than just a place to stay. Your hosts, Richard and Michelle, are delighted to share their local knowledge, from arranging private tours to helping you plan your itinerary. Whether it’s garden visits, scenic hikes, cycling adventures, or a day’s fishing, they have plenty of ideas to make your time in Central Hawke’s Bay memorable.
