Ongaonga is a charming historic village in Central Hawke’s Bay, known for its beautifully preserved heritage buildings and rich local history. At the heart of the village stands the iconic Coles Brothers Joinery factory, built in 1878 by Edward Coles. This Category 1 listed building is the only remaining 19th-century joinery factory in New Zealand and played a vital role in the community, employing up to 20 men and hosting diverse trades like carpentry, surveying, and even coffin making.

Visitors can explore Ongaonga’s self-guided heritage trails and museum, which celebrates the stories of early settlers and local craftsmanship.

The peaceful rural setting also offers excellent hiking and fly-fishing opportunities for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Situated just 76 km (about 55 minutes’ drive) from Napier and 82 km from Palmerston North, Ongaonga is an ideal base to explore the wider Central Hawke’s Bay region - including its stunning beaches and mountain ranges.

With its friendly community, vibrant local art scene, and relaxing atmosphere, Ongaonga provides an authentic and welcoming experience to complement your stay at 61 Bridge Street and Harry’s Hideaway accommodation.
